To be a good canine citizen your Shih Poo puppy must learn basic manners. The key to success is to make training fun. Puppies love to play, so convince him/her that training is a game. Keep training short, five minutes long, several time each day.
Always give your Shih Poo puppy lots of verbal praise and caresses when it accomplishes any feat. Eventually, they will do what you ask them to do because they want to please you.
Start with simple commands such as sit or come. Be patient!
A basic obedience training class for your puppy, is one of the most effective ways to teach your Shih Poo puppy to pay attention and socialize. Obedience classes can begin at the age of 4 to 5 months.
Your house rules should begin from Day 1! Puppies are able to learn basic commands at 2 months of age. By 3 months, their brains are fully formed and open to learning, so take the time to turn your Shih Poo puppy into a well behaved member of the family.
When training, always be consistent. Do things the same way. Dogs are creatures of habit. Follow the “3 P’s” of training:
- lots of Praise
You will be most successful if you work with your Shih Poo puppy for 5 minutes then allow him/her to rest. Do this several times per day. Always make it fun.
Simple/ Basic Commands for your Shih Poo Puppy:
- Call them by their Name (Use the puppy’s name repeatedly throughout every day. Such as “Come, Princess” or “Good Girl, Princess” and “No, Princess”)
- No (This is an important one, specifically for safety reasons)
- Drop it
- Leave it
